Engine operation

Four - or four-stroke internal combustion engines use two main types of valves - Engine Intake Exhaust Valve. The Intake Valve opens to allow the air/fuel mixture to flow into the engine cylinder before compression and ignition, while the exhaust valve opens to allow exhaust gas from the combustion process after ignition has occurred.

In normal operation, the Crankshaft attached to the piston in the engine is connected to the camshaft as part of the valve mechanism of the engine. The movement of the crankshaft is transmitted to the camshaft by a timing chain, timing belt, or other gear mechanism. The timing and alignment between the crankshaft position (which determines the piston position in the cylinder) and the camshaft position (which determines the cylinder valve position) is critical not only for peak engine performance, but also for engine performance. Prevents interference between pistons and valves in high-compression engines.

In the intake cycle, the intake cylinder piston circulates downward as the intake valve opens. The piston motion creates negative pressure, which helps draw the air/fuel mixture into the cylinder. Just after the piston reaches the lowest position in the cylinder (called BDC), the intake valve closes. During the compression cycle, when the piston rises to the highest position in the cylinder (called TDC), the intake valve closes to seal the cylinder, thereby compressing the air/fuel mixture to a smaller volume. This compression is used to provide a higher pressure to the piston when the fuel is ignited and to preheat the mixture to aid in the efficient combustion of the fuel. In the power cycle, the air/fuel mixture is ignited, creating an explosion that forces the piston back to its lowest position and transfers the chemical energy released by the burning air/fuel mixture to the rotating motion of the crankshaft. The exhaust cycle causes the piston to rise again in the cylinder, while the intake valve remains closed and the exhaust valve is now open. The pressure created by the piston helps push the exhaust gas out of the cylinder through the exhaust valve and into the exhaust manifold. Connected to the exhaust manifold is the exhaust system, a set of pipes that includes a muffler to reduce noise, and a catalytic converter system to manage engine combustion emissions. Once the piston reaches the top of the cylinder in the exhaust cycle, the exhaust valve begins to close and the intake valve begins to open, starting the process again. Note that the cylinder pressure at intake helps to keep the intake valve open, and the high pressure in the compression cycle helps to keep both valves closed.

In an engine with multiple cylinders, the same four cycles are repeated in each cylinder, but in order so that the engine provides smooth power and minimizes noise and vibration. The sequence of piston movement, valve movement, and ignition is accomplished by precise mechanical design and electrical timing that sends an ignition signal to the Spark plug, thus igniting the air/fuel mixture.
