Engine Intake Exhaust Valve basics
The Engine Valve is located in the cylinder head. The main function of the engine valve is to let air in and out of the cylinder. This air is used to help ignite the fuel, which drives the piston up and down.
There are two types of engine valves: intake and exhaust.
Of course, the Intake Valve lets the air in and the exhaust valve lets the exhaust gas out. The more air that goes in and out of the engine, the more efficient it is, and therefore the more power the engine has. This is why engine valves play a very critical role in engine performance.
The piston moves up and down in the cylinder. At the top of the piston stroke is the valve. The number of valves varies depending on the manufacturer. Since the piston is located at the bottom of the cylinder, the intake valve opens to let air in and then closes, making the cylinder airtight to generate compression. Once the piston completes the compression stroke and the ignition stroke, the exhaust valve opens and exhausts the exhaust gas. Then it shuts down immediately. But you may ask how do valves open and close? There is one shaft that pushes all the valves, called the camshaft.
