Introduce
The Cylinder Liner is a detachable, cylindrical component that plugs into the engine block. It provides a sliding surface for the piston and performs its compression task. It can be replaced when worn out. The cylinder is usually made of cast iron.
Classification of cylinder liner
The following are the various types of cylinder liner used in internal combustion engines: 1) wet cylinder liner and 2) dry cylinder liner
We will now discuss the above cylinder liner: wet cylinder liner, dry cylinder liner
Wet cylinder liner
Fully detachable wet cylinder walls fitted into the cylinder by washers. They are called wet linings because their outer surface is in direct contact with the engine coolant.
Dry cylinder liner
Dry liner designs use cylinder material or separate liner inserted into the cylinder block to form the skeleton of the cylinder wall. Additional sleeves are inserted into them, thus drying on their outer surfaces. Dry linings have relatively thin walls compared to wet linings.
Cylinder liner function
A cylinder liner is a cylindrical part that is installed into the engine block to form the cylinder. It is one of the most important functional components that make up the interior of an engine.
These are the main functions of the cylinder liner. 1) Formation of sliding surface 2) heat transfer and 3) compressed gas seal
Material selection
Cylinder liners are traditionally made of cast iron and then cast or pressed into an engine block, usually aluminum. Typically, a machining process called honing is used to give the desired finish to the cylinder liner surface.
Cylinder liner manufacturing process
There are two casting methods for manufacturing cylinder liners: 1) sand casting 2) Centrifugal casting • Sand casting - Usually used for large, low speed engines. • Centrifugal casting - usually used for medium to high speed engines.
Lining measurement
Lining is measured for two reasons: to determine the wear rate of the lining, and to predict if and when the lining needs to be replaced. The lining is measured by measuring its diameter at a fixed point along its length.
Replacement lining
To replace the cylinder liner of an internal combustion engine, first we must remove the cylinder head, then remove the piston from the engine block, and then check the condition of the cylinder liner. Install a new liner after lifting the liner with a hoisting tool.
Conclusion
The cylinder liner is responsible for ensuring that extremely hot exhaust does not damage the engine's internal components. Due to its very important function, the use of replaceable cylinder liner can save time and expensive machine work.
Cylinder liner may rupture due to poor cooling, improper piston or piston fit, incorrect installation, foreign matter in the combustion space, or erosion and corrosion.
