There are five kinds of problems with engine pistons. Do you know what they are? And how to fix it and prevent it?
Pistons in modern engines are durable, but sometimes they go wrong. These are the most common piston failures:
Problem 01: The timing belt breaks
The timing belt keeps the movement of the piston and valve perfectly tuned, but if it breaks, they can collide and potentially catastrophic damage can occur.
Problem 02: Piston ring wear
The rings eventually began to wear out and the seal between the piston and the cylinder was no longer airtight. As a result, oil enters the combustion chamber from the crankcase through the piston.
Problem 03: Piston slap
If the noise does not disappear after the engine reaches temperature, the piston or cylinder may be worn. The piston noise is caused by the excessive clearance between the piston and the cylinder wall.
Problem 04: Burning piston
Only visible when the top of the engine is removed, signs of melting, and even holes in the top of the piston, are due to a dirty fuel injector or the wrong type of spark plug installed.
Problem 05: Piston rupture
Causes include chronic use of poor quality (low octane) fuel or failure of exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) systems.
How to prevent piston damage
First, the best way to make sure the piston is working at maximum efficiency is to make sure the rest of the car is in top working condition. So, change the oil and filter at the recommended intervals - and make sure you are using the right oil for your engine.
Then, check if the engine coolant is in good condition. Open the radiator cap (only if the engine is cold) or check the water in the coolant reservoir.
Finally, check the last time to replace spark plug (gasoline engine), when a certain time, please timely better spark plug.
